Terrorising the screen for over forty years, the creature known as the xenomorph or more commonly referred to outside the films as the alien, is arguably the most pure cinematic monster that has ever existed. The series, which began with the legendary original Alien in 1979, has continued to draw in both science-fiction and horror lovers for decades. The eponymous creature is a lethal hunter, with a slick, elongated head and a set of oozing teeth that hides a second, pulsing maw that it can propel forward to burst into the flesh of its extremely unlucky victims. Designed by the legendary artist H.R. Giger - originating from his painting, Necronom IV - the xenomorph has been mostly resigned to the shadows, hunting Ellen Ripley and the crew of the Nostromo in the tension-filled first installment, which instantly propelled it into the annals of horror movie history.

Though the initial movie and the third film, Alien 3 (1992), only featured one of the creatures, the rest of the series, including the crossovers with the ‘80s classic creature, Predator, featured masses of the hunters. While they have been killed with the persistent use of firearms, blunt force or ejection into space, they are formidable threats to humans, silently hunting from above, or impregnating hosts using ‘facehuggers’. These spider-like creatures, with their terrifying speed and vice-like strength, clasp themselves to the faces of their prey, and, using an extending fleshy tube, lay eggs through the oesophagus and into the victim’s chest cavity. In some of the most horrific scenes in the franchise (which has expanded since the ‘70s to include novels, comics, video games and a TV series), the newborn xenomorphs burst from the chests of the unfortunates, instantly killing them and bringing a newly-formed horror into the world.
